About

www.OneBeautifulPlanet.org was founded in 2023 by me, Razvan Dominic Ionescu. I am a financial services professional and community volunteer based in the Greater Philadelphia area.

Originally from Romania, I grew up in Bucharest, spent summers hiking in the Transylvanian Alps, and occasionally enjoyed the Romanian beaches along the Black Sea Coast.

The website is born out of my desire to reconnect with my love of nature, take concrete environmental action, share and relearn forgotten lessons, maintain accountability, and encourage participation along the way. I hope it will become a source of knowledge and inspiration to toward a cleaner, healthier planet.

The Significance of Our Logo

The Albatross

A symbol of all animals, the albatross is a majestic bird with the largest wingspan in the world, of up to 12 feet. It can travel for thousands of miles across oceans, and can fly for months and even years without ever touching land. I was inspired by the albatross’ incredible potential, as well as by the photo of a dead albatross taken by Chris Jordan in 2009 on Midway Atoll, a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The photo became famous and displayed for the whole world to see how the poor creature had ingested all sorts of pieces of colorful plastic, likely confusing them with food.

Trees and Leaves

Symbolizing all plant life, indispensable, as food, habitat, or providers of oxygen.

Buildings

The skyline represents the built environment, and humanity’s impact in a nutshell. This part is connected to my work on the litter cleanup front, to recognize the need for harmony and integration. We can no longer escape the fact that we live in the Anthropocene, and any positive change we can ultimately strive for starts with awareness of our impact on, and responsibility toward our habitat.

The Circle

The shape of a circle is a powerful, rich symbol, for Planet Earth, as well as the concept of circularity, as advocated by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation as an aspirational world economic model: a circular economy. Ellen MacArthur was inspired and transformed by her voyage and world record in solo sailing circumnavigation of the globe in 2005.
